Major Russian banks hit with DDoS attacks as Ukraine claims responsibility

Several major Russian banks experienced distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that temporarily disrupted their mobile apps and websites. VTB, a state-owned bank, reported that its clients encountered issues using online services due to the attack “planned from abroad.” The Russian Agricultural Bank said it was hit by a DDoS attack on Tuesday, but consequences were minimal thanks to its enhanced system for combating attacks.

Gazprombank, Russia’s third-largest bank, reported difficulties with transactions in its app due to the attacks. Other affected banks included Alfa Bank, Rosbank, and Post Bank.

Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) claimed responsibility for the DDoS campaign against Russian banks. HUR officials said the attacks also disrupted several Russian payment systems and telecom operators.

This is not Ukraine’s first claim of hacking into Russian enterprises. In October, hackers and Ukraine’s security service (SBU) breached Russia’s largest private bank, Alfa-Bank. In January, attackers released data they claimed belonged to 30 million bank customers.
