At least 10 people were killed and many more injured in a mass shooting at a school in Örebro, Sweden on Tuesday. The suspected gunman was also shot dead by police.
The shooting occurred at Campus Risbergska, a school for adult education, and is being described as the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. Police said that the perpetrator was not known to them before the shooting and did not appear to be connected to any gangs or have ideological motives.
The Prime Minister of Sweden, Ulf Kristersson, offered his condolences to the victims and their families, calling it a “brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people”. The King also released a statement expressing sadness and dismay at the news of the shooting.
Six people were taken to the local university hospital with gunshot wounds, including four who underwent surgery. The police are investigating various addresses in Örebro and have warned the public to avoid the area.
The school had an unusually low number of students on campus at the time of the attack, but one eyewitness recalled hearing three bangs and loud screams during the incident. Scandinavian authorities have worked to crack down on gun violence in recent years, following a surge in deadly gang-related shootings.
