100 Things to Be Thankful for in Eugene

As I sit down to write this, I’m grateful for many things about my community. Let’s start with the basics – two buttes and two rivers that complement each other well. Our cities of Eugene and Springfield work together nicely. Waiters who remember my usual order are a lifesaver on chaotic days.

Service clubs do crucial behind-the-scenes work to keep our communities going. I’m thankful for poetic rhymes in songs, like James Taylor’s “Now the first of December was covered with snow.” The University of Oregon enriches us with its sports, science, arts, journalism, and visiting lecturers. Caretakers care for those who can’t care for themselves – they’re quiet heroes.

The Florence-to-Yachats drive on Highway 101 is my favorite stretch of road in Oregon. I’m grateful for Ya-Po-Ah Terrace’s “Peace on Earth” sign, the retirement high-rise that keeps this tradition alive. First responders risk their lives to save others, including me. Their bravery inspires me.

Laughter is vital to a community’s health. Oregon’s geographic diversity allows us to see sunrises at sea level and sunsets atop 10,358-foot peaks in the same day. Local crafters, cooks, and bakers enrich our community with their skills.

Service clubs and pioneers have built our city’s foundation. I appreciate local media that abides in a challenging landscape, offering objective stories that fortify democracy. Life-sized ducks created by local artists bring joy to residents and visitors.

Pizza is quirkily captivating, and its unique shape is an invention like no other. Seasons are essential for life in the city – without them, I wouldn’t know who I am. Eugene has much to be thankful for, from its people to its places.
