Splitgate 2, the sequel to the popular arena shooter Splitgate, has been unlaunched by its developer 1047 Games just two months after its release. The game’s servers will remain online for now, but players can expect a significant overhaul in early 2026.
According to CEO Ian Proulx, the decision to unlaunch the game was made due to its numerous technical and structural issues, which hindered player enjoyment. Despite the controversy surrounding the game’s launch, Proulx believes that Splitgate 2 has potential but needs significant changes to address fan concerns.
The community wants a leaderboard, better progression, more portal walls, and adjustments to game modes. To achieve this, 1047 Games plans to do regular playtests with the community on a separate branch of the game. If fans hate it, they can say so, and the team will scrap it.
Proulx acknowledges that Splitgate 2 was “too ambitious” and that the team should have taken a more approachable strategy, like Apex Legends, which successfully dropped its first content without much hype.
Splitgate 1’s servers will be shut down in about a month as part of cost-cutting measures. The company has laid off an unknown number of staff previously and is currently letting go of another 45 employees. Proulx emphasizes that the studio’s financial situation is uncertain but can afford to take time.
Controversies surrounding Splitgate 2’s launch, including the influencer marketing strategy and microtransactions, have been addressed by Proulx. He vows to do things differently next time but acknowledges that even if the game were perfect, fans wouldn’t stick around.
In a statement, Proulx expressed his determination to revive Splitgate: “We’ve been through worse days… We’re going away, not quitting. We love this and will keep doing what we can to stay alive.”
