A 10th case of measles has been confirmed in Utah, according to the Utah Department of Health and Human Services (UDHHS). The latest patient is from the Southwest Utah Public Health District and had previously documented two cases. In the Utah County Health District, seven people remain infected.
All unvaccinated individuals are affected by this outbreak. To prevent transmission, those who have contracted measles should isolate themselves until they are no longer contagious. Symptoms typically appear within 7-14 days after exposure, including a high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes.
If symptoms arise, stay away from others and contact a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital to minimize the risk of transmission. UDHHS officials recommend at least one dose of MMR vaccine for individuals over 1 year old, even if they have not been exposed to measles.
However, in Utah’s general community, the risk of measles is considered low due to only a few cases reported. Infants aged 6-11 months should receive an early dose of MMR when traveling internationally or domestically. Young children can get their second MMR dose before age 4.
