11 Chinese Sentenced to Death Over $1.4bn Gambling Scam

A court in China has sentenced 11 members of a powerful family syndicate to death for their alleged roles in a massive illegal gambling and scam operation worth over $1.4 billion. The syndicate, accused of running “reality TV” scams and targeting people worldwide, used armed force to establish compounds in Myanmar. The court found that the group killed 14 people, including those who tried to escape or disobeyed their orders. China has been cracking down on such scam centres through joint operations with local police forces, resulting in the release of over 7,000 workers in a recent operation along the Thai-Myanmar border.
