A mass shooting in Montenegro, a small Balkan country, left 13 people dead and injured four others, including one critically, following a New Year’s Day incident. Aleksandar Aco Martinovic, the suspected gunman, was found dead after hours of search by authorities.
According to police, Martinovic had been drinking at a restaurant-bar in Cetinje before an altercation with a patron around 5:30 pm local time. He returned with a weapon he’d retrieved from his home and killed four men at the establishment. The shooter then targeted other locations, killing two children, members of his own family, and others.
The victims included the bar owner, his 10- and 13-year-old children, as well as relatives of Martinovic. Four people were injured in the incident. Police ordered Martinovic to drop his weapon, prompting him to attempt suicide by shooting himself in the head. The Interior Minister stated that the shooting was a “consequence of disturbed interpersonal relations.”
Montenegro’s Prime Minister has announced an emergency meeting of the Security Council to discuss new firearm restrictions following this and the country’s previous mass shooting in three years. A complete ban on possessing weapons is reportedly being considered by authorities.
