A deadly shootout broke out in South Sudan on Monday between government troops and opposition fighters over a suspected “love triangle” dispute. At least 14 soldiers were killed and several others injured in the clash at a market near the oil-rich Abyei Box region, which straddles the border between Sudan and South Sudan.
The conflict is linked to the fragile power-sharing deal between President Salva Kiir and his long-time rival, Riek Machar. Machar was recently indicted on charges of murder and treason, further fueling fears of renewed tensions. The dispute began when two officers, one pro-Machar and the other pro-Kiir, reportedly quarreled over a woman they both claimed to love.
The violence escalated into a full-blown clash, with both sides’ bodyguards opening fire on each other’s men. The situation quickly spread to primary checkpoints and barracks, resulting in multiple casualties. An investigation has been launched into the incident, which is not considered politically motivated by authorities.
South Sudan’s fragile peace deal is under threat as violence continues to surge in the country. The United Nations has warned that South Sudan is on the brink of renewed war, with nearly 2,000 civilians killed this year alone. Humanitarian access is also being restricted, and incidents affecting civilians have doubled from last year.
