1,400 Infants Infection Daily Due US Aid Disruptions

The US administration’s cuts to funding for AIDS organizations have caused widespread disruptions, leading to the closure of over a third of global HIV service providers within days. This has resulted in hundreds of thousands of people losing access to life-saving treatments, including women and girls missing out on cervical cancer screenings. Modeling suggests that 1,400 infants are being infected with HIV every day due to these cuts. The US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has been granted a waiver, but it is considered limited in scope and not widely communicated to the field. Nonprofits and aid organizations are scrambling to find new sources of funding independent of the US, warning that progress in disease eradication, poverty reduction, and gender equality is at risk of being reversed without urgent action.
