The US government has confirmed that at least 155 Chinese citizens are fighting for the Russian military against Ukraine, with most appearing to be mercenaries who do not have a direct link to China’s government. The revelation comes as Beijing has denied any involvement in the war.
According to two US officials and a former Western intelligence official, the Chinese fighters seem to have minimal training and are not having a significant impact on Russia’s military operations. However, Chinese military officers have been touring near Russia’s frontlines with Beijing’s approval to draw lessons and tactics from the war.
This is part of China’s broader support for Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, which includes providing material aid, lethal drones, and other equipment. The Biden administration has sanctioned Chinese companies for providing such assistance to Moscow.
The presence of foreign fighters adds complexity to the conflict, with volunteers from Western countries like the US already fighting for Ukraine. North Korea has also deployed troops to support Russian forces.
