A playground in the English town of Wooler has been closed after workers discovered 176 unexploded World War II bombs buried underneath. The discovery was made on January 14, when excavation work began to expand the play area.
The army bomb disposal team was alerted and worked to clear the site, but more bombs were found as excavations continued. A second firm, Brimstone Site Investigations, examined the playground and confirmed that many of the devices are “training devices” or practice bombs, still posing a threat despite being intact.
Historical records show that Wooler previously hosted a Home Guard training center, which likely disposed of its ordnance by burying it in several pits. The parish council is working to clear the site, but more challenges remain as they uncover additional bomb-filled pits.
