Negative self-talk is a common obstacle that can hold us back. As a motivational speaker, I’ve found myself struggling with it too. However, I believe motivation isn’t always the best approach to overcome negative thoughts.
When faced with challenges like “This is hard and I can’t do this,” our minds often respond with motivation-based solutions. We might try to deny or downplay the difficulty or argue that we’re capable of overcoming it. But research shows that these methods only provide temporary relief before reality sets back in.
In contrast, influence-based interventions can be more effective. Instead of trying to motivate ourselves through denial or argumentation, we should acknowledge our limitations and focus on our strengths. This mindset shift can lead to a stronger sense of self and better behavior.
By using words like “but,” “yet,” and “and” – often referred to as “magic words” – we can reframe our negative thoughts and respond more constructively. These words encourage us to acknowledge reality, focus on our abilities, and look forward to the future.
It’s time to shift our focus from motivation to influence. By doing so, we can overcome negative self-talk, improve our mood, and develop a stronger sense of identity that drives better behavior.
