Two men from New York have died after using bat poop, or guano, as fertilizer to grow cannabis. The Rochester residents inhaled fungus spores from the guano, leading to a lung infection called histoplasmosis.
The fungus released a harmful compound that caused symptoms such as chronic cough, fever, blood poisoning, and respiratory failure. After hospitalization and treatment with antifungal medication, both men died.
One man bought guano online, while the other found it in his attic after discovering a heavy bat infestation. Bat guano is used by many cannabis growers due to its high nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium content. However, the case highlights the importance of raising awareness about using bat guano as fertilizer.
Experts warn that the increasing use of bat guano in cannabis cultivation, combined with its promotion as a “natural superfood,” poses a significant risk to public health. This situation underscores the need for greater caution when handling and utilizing this unconventional fertilizer.
