Two passengers from Minnesota and Texas, Hannah Krebs and Marthinus Lourens, have filed federal lawsuits against Delta Airlines over last week’s Minneapolis-to-Toronto crash. The lawsuits claim gross negligence and recklessness by the flight crew, as well as violations of airline industry standards.
The suit alleges that the crew’s actions caused the plane to skid down the runway upside down after taking off, resulting in physical and emotional injuries to passengers. Krebs is seeking compensation for her economic losses, while Lourens’ lawsuit claims damages due to his injuries.
Delta has offered to pay $30,000 to each passenger on the flight, but a spokesperson stated that the payment does not affect their rights. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is leading the investigation into the crash, which involved 80 passengers and crew members. Despite the severity of the incident, no fatalities were reported, and all but one passenger has since been released from hospital with injuries.
Experts attribute the survival of all on board to the design of modern passenger jets, which feature fuel tanks in the wings designed to break off in a crash, as well as seats and seat belts capable of withstanding impacts up to 16 times gravity.
