OpenAI has launched its Deep Research feature, a tool that can synthesize content from the web into one detailed report in minutes. This feature can save workers hours by completing research autonomously. However, it also raises concerns about job replacement.
According to Min Choi, an X user who asked ChatGPT’s o3 reasoning model to list 20 jobs that will be replaced by AI. The results were shocking: tax preparer with a probability of 98% replacement, followed by data entry clerk and telemarketer. The jobs are mostly technical skills-based roles, such as transcriptionist, proofreader, copywriter, customer service representative, email marketer, content marketer, social media manager, translator, technical support analyst, recruiter, market research analyst, travel agent, and tutor.
The common theme among these jobs is that they rely on technical skills that AI can perform autonomously. However, the report highlights that soft skills like communication, critical thinking, conflict resolution, leadership, time management, and interpersonal skills are equally important for success and cannot be replicated by AI.
While this research suggests that some jobs may become obsolete, it’s unlikely to lead to widespread job loss. Organizations are still hesitant to adopt AI due to infrastructure limitations, lack of clarity on return on investment, and disconnection from employees.
For those interested in trying Deep Research, there is a free open-source alternative available through Google’s Gemini Advanced plan or Hugging Face’s newly released equivalent, which offers lower-cost options without sacrificing quality.
