20 Killed in Israeli Strikes on Gaza, War Rages On with New Fronts

At least 20 Palestinians were killed in recent Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip, according to local health officials. The strikes come as Israel has opened a new front with heavy attacks on Iran, sparking retaliatory drone and missile attacks.

In addition to the Palestinian casualties, 11 people were killed overnight near food distribution points run by an Israeli- and US-supported humanitarian group. The sites are located in military zones off-limits to independent media, but witnesses reported that Israeli forces fired warning shots at crowds, leading to panic.

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which operates the sites, said they were closed on Saturday due to the danger posed by Israel’s blockade and military campaign, which has driven the territory to the brink of famine. Despite this, thousands gathered near the sites, desperate for food.

Al-Awda Hospital received eight bodies and 125 wounded people from a shooting near a GHF site in central Gaza. In Khan Younis, Nasser Hospital reported 16 dead, including five women, from multiple Israeli strikes late Friday and early Saturday.

The US and Israel claim that their new aid system is intended to replace the UN’s network, which has distributed aid across Gaza for 20 months of war. However, the UN denies allegations that Hamas has diverted significant amounts of aid, saying the new system is unable to meet mounting needs.

Hamas sparked the war with a rampage into southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 people and abducting 251. The conflict has killed over 55,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The war has drawn in Iran and its other allies across the region, leading to a chain of events that resulted in Israel’s major strikes on Iran’s nuclear and military facilities.
