The movie Home Alone has become a classic holiday staple, with a perfect blend of slapstick humor and clever tricks. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice numerous Easter eggs that add depth and fun to the film. Here are some of the most notable ones.
A precursor to the chaos later on, Mr. McCallister instructs Kevin to pick up his Micro Machines because “Aunt Leslie stepped on one and almost broke her neck.” This sets the stage for Harry and Marv’s subsequent injuries.
Later, Kevin’s mom tells his dad that Kevin was in the garage playing with a glue gun. This is later used by Kevin to cover plastic wrap, creating an amusing scene where poor Marv steps onto them barefoot.
The expectation surrounding Kevin burning down the house is met with resistance from his dad when he reprimands him for using the glue gun. However, it’s revealed that Kevin didn’t indeed burn the place down.
A background dummy of Uncle Frank catches the eye, as does a pizza slogan: “No Fiddlin’ Around!” The phrase itself pokes fun at doing trivial things during emergencies, reminiscent of the expression “Nero fiddled while Rome burned.”
Pay attention to what’s said about traveler checks when Kevin’s dad mentions they may not work in France. This later becomes significant due to the accidental loss of his plane ticket and passport.
The appearance of a random pair of rollerblades in the kitchen is funny, as they reappear in the basement and back again. The neighbor kid whose home was robbed by Harry and Marv is named Mitch Murphy.
Kevin also pilfers Buzz’s Crunch Tators from his footlocker and leaves them on a side table while eating ice cream. You can see basketball figurines Kevin breaks down into the laundry chute on Buzz’s bookshelves, hinting at Kevin bringing the figurines back up.
Buzz has an Indiana Jones parody card in his memo board, making it amusing.
To make his trick on the pizza delivery guy more effective, Kevin hauled massive speakers into the kitchen. The red Christmas bow that goes flying off during the storm magically reappears back on the lamp post later.
The garage door was left open, but surprisingly, cars aren’t even pulled all the way into it when they return home. Kevin can’t find his toothbrush because his mom packed it away for their trip.
Using a robe to disguise himself in a nativity display is cleverly done with a curtain from the display itself being fixed back up by someone at the church.
Kevin cuts out the basketball from Buzz’s Michael Jordan poster, repairs it with tape, and later finds the poster together again. The mannequins Kevin uses for his makeshift party can be seen in the basement earlier on.
A hidden Coca-Cola can in one of the mannequin’s hands is amusing because Pepsi is prominent throughout the movie.
Tiny rocks are tossed at a spider to make it move, making it an entertaining scene. When grocery bags break, the missing container of Tide detergent is noticeable.
The reason behind the breaking gag was using string, which becomes apparent upon closer inspection.
When listening carefully, you can hear the basement furnace saying “Hello, Kevin.”
Kevin’s mac ‘n’ cheese dinner changes to a different frozen dinner when Harry enters. The presence of a doggy door in the house is inexplicable due to the absence of the family dog for the trip.
Lastly, it’s revealed that Harry is married, leaving viewers with another subtle Easter egg.
