A slab of rock discovered in Queensland, Australia, has revealed the remains of 47 individual dinosaurs. The 200-million-year-old fossil was gifted to Biloela State High School and had been on display for 20 years. A team led by Anthony Romilio from the University of Queensland re-examined the slab after it was cast with a 3D silicon model, taken photographs, and processed them.
The team’s investigation showed that the rock contains an impressive collection of dinosaur footprints. “I knew it was a highly significant discovery,” said Romilio. The fossil was initially hidden by school students who had stuck chewing gum on it, but the team managed to remove it.
Romilio confirmed that the find is an important specimen for palaeontology. The slab’s weight made it challenging to lift, but the team persevered to study the fossil in detail.
