2024’s Cosmic Wonders Captivated Skywatchers Worldwide

2024 was a stellar year for skywatchers, with breathtaking comets, spectacular auroras, and a rare total solar eclipse crossing North America. Our community members captured these celestial events and shared them with us.

Comet Pons-Brooks, also known as the Devil Comet, stole the show in 2024, displaying occasional outbursts that gave it a horned appearance. Later, Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS became visible to the naked eye, leaving astronomers awestruck.

The moon was a highlight of 2024, with a Full Blue Supermoon in August and passing directly in front of the sun during the total solar eclipse in April. Solar maximum in May sparked strong auroral storms on Earth.

As always, we received stunning images of our universe, including photos of deep-sky objects like Andromeda. Our community members also shared breathtaking views of their home planet, Earth. From landscapes to wildlife, we loved seeing it all!

Kelly Kizer Whitt, EarthSky’s nature and travel vlogger, captured the beauty of our world on camera. With decades of experience writing about science and astronomy, Kelly continues to inspire with her fascinating stories.
