2024’s Hidden Gems: A Year of Exceptional Films and Talent

It’s been a year where big-budget blockbusters haven’t quite hit the mark, but there have been many exceptional films released in the UK. The big question is whether creative humanity can survive with the increasing presence of AI in filmmaking.

Among the few standout releases was Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera, which earned her Best Director accolades. Other notable mentions include Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, and Sean Baker’s Anora.

Meanwhile, Daniel Day-Lewis made a surprise comeback after a long hiatus, starring alongside his son Ronan in their drama about father-son dynamics.

On the flip side, AI continues to make its presence felt in filmmaking. Liongate has partnered with Runway AI to explore their back catalogue. More recently, Warner Bros Discovery has been accused of neglecting Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Juror#2, and instead opting for a streaming release.

However, despite the lackluster output from Hollywood’s biggest names, there are many hidden gems worth discovering. With lesser-known directors such as Alice Rohrwacher, Payal Kapadia, Sean Baker, Jane Schoenbrun, and more, this year has shown that there is still much to be celebrated in independent cinema.

The awards below reflect the diversity of talented individuals who deserve recognition for their outstanding work.
