2025 Perseid Meteor Shower Outshines Moon in Spectacular Show

The 2025 Perseid meteor shower peaked on August 12-13, dazzling skywatchers worldwide with its spectacular display of shooting stars. Despite the glare of a waning gibbous moon, the Perseids managed to put on an awe-inspiring show.

The Perseid meteor shower occurs every July and August as Earth passes through the trail of dusty debris shed by the comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. The peak of the shower coincided with the densest part of the comet’s trail, resulting in a spectacular display of meteors burning up in the atmosphere.

However, the appearance of the full moon made it challenging for stargazers to spot the Perseids. Fortunately, photographers were able to capture stunning images of the meteor shower, which outshone the moon and provided breathtaking views of the night sky.

Photographers from around the world captured remarkable images of the Perseid meteors streaking across the sky, including Harlan Thomas’s aurora-lit shot, Josh Dury’s Milky Way-studded image, and Ameet Kini’s bright meteor with a “smoke” trail. Others, like Jeff Berkes and Matt Melnyk, captured rare views of Perseids blazing through colorful auroras.

The Perseid meteor shower will continue to be active until August 23, offering stargazers another chance to witness this spectacular event. For those interested in photographing the meteor shower, Space.com’s guide provides practical advice on how to capture the night sky.
