2025 Social Security Changes Affect Millions of Americans

Millions of Americans relying on Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) need to be aware of upcoming changes starting in 2025. These adjustments may impact monthly checks, making applications easier, and providing a new log-in process.

In January 2025, the cost of living adjustment (COLA) will increase by 2.5%, boosting monthly benefits by approximately $50 for those receiving Social Security. Although this is the lowest COLA since 2020, it’s relatively in line with past increases.

For Supplemental Security Income (SSI), an online, streamlined application has been introduced, which aims to simplify the process and make it more accessible. The new system, set to expand to all applicants in late 2025, features user-tested questions, pre-populated answers, and seamless transitions.

Additionally, a new rule will expand SSI eligibility, making more Americans eligible for benefits and potentially increasing payments for those already receiving them. This change affects approximately 109,000 people who are expected to qualify for SSI under the new rule.

Furthermore, the Social Security Administration is transitioning its online “My Social Security” accounts to Login.gov, requiring account holders to create a new account or link their existing one by September 18, 2021.
