A devastating roof collapse at a popular nightclub in the Dominican Republic has claimed 226 lives, with one more victim passing away in hospital on Saturday. The incident occurred during a merengue concert at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo.
Rescue efforts yielded 189 survivors, while over 200 were injured, with 14 still hospitalized in critical condition. Politicians, athletes, and a fashion designer were among those present when disaster struck.
The latest victim was a 41-year-old Costa Rican national who died from her injuries. Health officials said the majority of victims had to be identified using biometric data due to delays. Notable victims include former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera.
An investigation into the cause of the collapse has begun, with prosecutors visiting the scene on Thursday. The government is still working to return the bodies of those who have been claimed by death.
