A US bankruptcy judge has approved the sale of 23andMe’s assets and business operations to a nonprofit led by co-founder and former CEO Anne Wojcicki. The deal, worth $305 million, is expected to close in the coming weeks. As part of the agreement, TTAM Research Institute will take over 23andMe’s genetic testing services, with plans to enhance privacy practices while respecting customers’ rights to delete their accounts and data.
The sale comes after 23andMe filed for bankruptcy this year, amid concerns over genetic data security and misuse. The company had struggled with recurring revenue growth and faced criticism over its handling of sensitive customer information. In a statement, Wojcicki emphasized her commitment to empowering individuals to make informed choices about their genetic data.
Under the new ownership, 23andMe’s customers will continue to have access to their genetic information and ancestry data. The nonprofit has assured customers that they can opt out of research or delete their accounts at any time, maintaining transparency and control over their personal data.
