3 Die as Legionnaires’ Outbreak Spreads in Harlem’s Central Community Cluster

A cluster of Legionnaires’ disease has broken out in Harlem, killing three people among the 70 diagnosed since July 25. The New York City Health Department is investigating a community outbreak linked to ZIP codes 10027, 10030, 10035, 10037, and 10039.

So far, 67 people have been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease, which can be caused by the bacteria Legionella. Officials say the outbreak is not expected to spread to other communities, as long as individuals are not visiting the affected buildings.

Remediation work has completed for the 11 cooling towers identified as having positive screening results. People experiencing flu-like symptoms, such as coughing, fever, or difficulty breathing, are urged to contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Those at higher risk, including older adults, cigarette smokers, and individuals with chronic lung disease or compromised immune systems, should seek medical attention if they show symptoms. Legionnaires’ disease can be treated with antibiotics, but complications are less likely if treatment begins early.

The outbreak is linked to plumbing systems where conditions favor Legionella growth, such as cooling towers, whirlpool spas, and hot water tanks.
