A severe flu season has claimed the lives of three local teenagers in San Diego County, with none of them receiving the flu vaccine. As of Thursday, a total of 73 deaths have occurred this season, mostly among people aged 50 and older.
Dr. Ankita Kadakia, interim public health officer, described the situation as “tragic and concerning” and attributed it to the prolonged nature of the current flu season. She emphasized that vaccination is the most effective way to prevent serious illness and death caused by the virus.
In San Diego County, nearly 80% of people between 5-17 years old remain unvaccinated. The flu vaccine is available at various locations, including doctors’ offices and public health centers, and is covered by medical insurance.
To combat the spread of the flu, health experts recommend frequent handwashing, social distancing, avoiding touching faces, and staying home if infected.
