34 Dead in Vietnamese Tour Boat Capsizing

A tourist boat carrying 48 passengers and five crew members capsized during a sudden thunderstorm in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay on Saturday, killing 34 people. Eight others remain missing. Rescue workers saved 11 people, while recovering the dead near the site of the accident.

The Wonder Sea boat was traveling through the popular destination when strong winds caused it to turn upside down. A 14-year-old boy was among the survivors and was rescued four hours after being trapped in the overturned hull.

Most of the passengers were tourists from Hanoi, including about 20 children. Authorities had initially reported that 12 people had been rescued, but later revised the figure to 11. The incident occurred just days before a tropical storm is expected to hit the area, with Storm Wipha forecast to affect Vietnam’s northern region, including Ha Long Bay’s coast next week.
