At least 36 Palestinians were killed in a shooting near an aid distribution center in southern Gaza on Tuesday, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health. The incident occurred when Israeli forces fired “warning shots” at individuals advancing towards them near the site.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which distributes aid to Gaza, has seen several shootings near its sites since it resumed operations last month. At least 163 people have been killed attempting to receive aid from the GHF.
Israeli forces claim they fired warning shots “hundreds of meters” away from the aid distribution site. However, two local hospitals in Gaza reported over 100 injuries.
The incident is the highest death toll from a shooting near an aid distribution center in Gaza since the opening of the US- and Israeli-backed aid sites last month. Palestinians are at risk of extreme starvation and famine due to ongoing tensions in the region.
