4 Celestial Events to Watch in April

A pink moon and a meteor shower are just two of the four celestial events that will be visible in the evening sky in April. The Lyrid meteor shower is expected to peak on April 21-22, with the potential for up to 100 meteors per hour.

The Lyrid meteor shower is one of the oldest known meteor showers and originates from Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. In mid-April, Earth encounters a stream of debris from the comet, causing the meteor shower.

Another event worth watching is the alignment of Venus, Saturn, and a waning crescent moon on April 25. This will create a “celestial smiley face” in the eastern sky about 30 minutes before sunrise.

Lastly, on April 27, Earth will experience its closest new supermoon, with the moon being approximately 17,000 miles closer to our planet than usual. However, this phase is not easily visible due to the moon’s proximity to Earth and its relatively low brightness compared to other phases.
