A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Minneapolis was aborted takeoff on Friday morning due to an engine issue, resulting in four passengers being injured. The incident occurred at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where the plane was scheduled to depart.
According to a statement from Delta, the flight crew followed established procedures to suspend the takeoff after an indication of an engine problem was detected. Despite the delay, controllers declared a ground stop before 8 am, which meant no planes could land or take off at the airport.
The snowfall in Atlanta contributed to the incident, with hundreds of flights being cancelled and hundreds more delayed due to weather conditions. The National Weather Service forecasted significant delays and cancellations across several airports in the US, including Charlotte, North Carolina, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Nashville.
Other states were also affected by the severe winter storm, with Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders mobilizing the National Guard to assist stranded motorists. Schools were canceled for millions of children across southern states from Texas to Georgia and as far east as South Carolina.
The storm brought heavy snowfall to parts of Arkansas and Tennessee, with some areas receiving up to 9 inches (22 centimeters) of snow. In Memphis, six inches of snow already covered the city by Friday morning, making travel treacherous.
Delta apologized for the inconvenience caused by the incident, citing the safety of its passengers and crew as the top priority. The airline is working to support customers and get them to their destinations as quickly as possible.
