A new study suggests that a simple approach to weight loss may be more effective than constantly counting calories. Researchers found that a 4:3 intermittent fasting routine led to a 7.6% average weight loss over a year, compared to just 5% with traditional daily caloric restriction diets.
The 4:3 schedule involves limiting calorie intake for three days each week and eating normally for the remaining four days. This approach was more effective than traditional daily caloric restriction diets, particularly in terms of adherence to diet plans.
Endocrinologist Victoria Catenacci led the research team, which consisted of 165 participants with overweight or obesity who were put through a 4:3 intermittent fasting routine or a daily caloric restriction diet over 12 months. The results showed that the 4:3 IMF group lost an average of 7.7 kg (17 pounds) compared to 4.8 kg (11 pounds) for the DRC group.
While there are some caveats, including potential biases in self-reported food intake and adherence, the study’s findings suggest that intermittent fasting may be a viable alternative to traditional weight loss diets. With obesity rates on the rise, more effective and personalized approaches are needed.
The researchers acknowledge that a comprehensive program focused on 4:3 IMF does not currently exist, but they aim to develop such a program for implementation in clinics and community programs that can make it accessible and affordable for people.
