Intermittent fasting has become a popular dietary pattern for weight loss in recent years. A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that 4:3 intermittent fasting may be more effective than daily calorie restriction for weight loss over 12 months.
In the study, 165 adults with overweight or obesity were randomly assigned to either follow 4:3 intermittent fasting or a daily calorie restriction diet. Participants in the 4:3 intermittent fasting group lost an average of 7.6% of their body weight, compared to 5% in the calorie restriction group.
The researchers also found that participants in the 4:3 intermittent fasting group had more encouraging changes in their cardiometabolic outcomes, including systolic blood pressure and cholesterol levels. However, further studies are needed to define the optimal fasting schedule and its health benefits.
Intermittent fasting can be challenging for some people due to factors such as medication, mood/emotional well-being, and social wellbeing. To make it more sustainable, experts recommend starting slow, having a support group, and being mindful of nutrient needs. A registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) can also help individuals navigate the best practices for implementing intermittent fasting.
The study’s findings suggest that 4:3 intermittent fasting may be a viable option for weight loss, but it is essential to consider individual factors and seek professional guidance before starting any new dietary pattern.
