45% of Type 2 Diabetes Patients Worldwide Have Micronutrient Deficiencies

A recent study published in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health reveals that nearly half of people with type 2 diabetes globally suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. The most common deficiency was vitamin D, affecting 60.5% of individuals with the condition.

The analysis, which pooled data from 132 studies involving over 52,000 participants, found that regional and gender differences played a significant role in the prevalence of micronutrient deficiencies. Women were at higher risk than men, and those in the Americas had the highest rates.

Researchers emphasize the importance of addressing not only energy metabolism but also overall nutrition to tackle these deficiencies. They call for targeted interventions and further studies to explore the causes and solutions to micronutrient deficiencies.

The study highlights the need to consider the impact of treatment on nutrient levels, as medications like metformin can interfere with vitamin B12 absorption. Additionally, overnutrition is a known risk factor for type 2 diabetes, making it essential to monitor and address micronutrient imbalances.

Experts argue that individual testing for nutrient deficiencies after any intervention is crucial, especially for older generations who are more prone to vitamin D deficiency due to reduced sun exposure and skin sensitivity changes. Regular full-panel blood testing should be part of health monitoring to prevent the negative effects of excess vitamins and minerals, known as vitaminosis.

The study’s findings underscore the importance of prioritizing overall nutrition in the management of type 2 diabetes, going beyond energy metabolism and macronutrient focus. By targeting interventions and promoting education on diet and supplementation, healthcare professionals can help mitigate the impact of micronutrient deficiencies on this condition.
