A $45 million stegosaurus fossil, named “Apex,” is now on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The giant dinosaur’s fossils, 11 feet tall and 27 feet long, will be showcased in a massive atrium before being moved to the museum’s existing fossil halls next year.
The stegosaurus was purchased by billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin at an auction in July for $45 million, setting a record for the most expensive dinosaur remains ever sold. Scientists hope to learn more about this remarkable creature through detailed analysis of its fossils. Apex is considered one of the most complete stegosaurus specimens ever found, with 80% of its 320 bones preserved.
Researchers plan to conduct CT scans of the fossil’s skull and analyze a small sample from one of its thigh bones to gain insights into stegosaurus metabolism and bone growth. This study could provide valuable information about this prehistoric species that lived 150 million years ago.
