The San Francisco 49ers have bolstered their backfield with the acquisition of Washington Commanders running back Brian Robinson. In exchange for a 2026 sixth-round draft pick, the Commanders are taking on $1.25 million owed to Robinson, his final year’s salary.
Robinson’s departure was expected after he sat out the second preseason game and reportedly fell out of favor with the team this summer. The 49ers, however, see an opportunity in the Alabama product, who has tallied 2,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns over three seasons.
The trade marks a change of scenery for Robinson, who will now play under Kyle Shanahan’s run-friendly offense. This scheme has produced unexpected standouts in the past, offering Robinson a chance to spell Christian McCaffrey and capitalize on scoring opportunities in goal-line situations.
This trade is Washington’s second with the 49ers this year, as they previously sent receiver Deebo Samuel to San Francisco for a 2025 fifth-round pick.
