49ers’ De’Vondre Campbell Suspended After Refusing to Play

San Francisco 49ers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell was suspended for the final three regular-season games after refusing to play in a must-win game against the Rams. Campbell, 31, had played 90% of defensive snaps in the first 13 games but assumed a reserve role against the Rams due to injuries.

Campbell’s decision to sit out came as a shock to his teammates, with cornerback Deommodore Lenoir saying, “I couldn’t have imagined that… We welcomed him with open arms. We would never have thought he would do something like that.”

Pass rusher Nick Bosa suggested Campbell had played his last snap in the NFL after declining to play a backup role, stating, “I’m sure he’s going to have a hard time finding somewhere else to go when you act like that.”

Campbell was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team, which has been an issue since he joined the 49ers. Last year, he expressed frustration with his old team’s coaching staff on social media before joining the 49ers.

The 49ers’ loss to the Rams dropped their record to 6-8 and comes after a sideline incident during a recent win at Tampa Bay where wide receiver Deebo Samuel shoved long snapper Taybor Pepper in the throat. However, Bosa disputes that Campbell’s refusal to play was a sign of team-wide disharmony, saying “This locker room’s great… We would never have thought he would do something like that.”
