San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch confirmed that discussions with quarterback Brock Purdy have begun, aiming to extend the young signal-caller’s contract. The focus remains on making Purdy the team’s long-term franchise quarterback.
Lynch stated that negotiations are underway and expressed confidence in reaching a deal. The 49ers’ track record of securing deals with core players is a positive indicator, with notable extensions given to George Kittle, Fred Warner, Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, and Brandon Aiyuk since 2020.
Purdy’s preferred timeline for an extension before the team begins its offseason program in April makes sense, as it would simplify OTAs and minicamp preparations. Lynch described early negotiations with Purdy as “good discussions.”
Meanwhile, tight end George Kittle is entering the final year of his deal, but discussions with his agent are ongoing. Lynch emphasized the team’s desire to keep Kittle, a key player who has expressed a wish to finish his career with the 49ers.
In other news, wideout Brandon Aiyuk is scheduled for an appointment with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in the coming weeks to assess his recovery from a torn ACL and MCL. Running back Christian McCaffrey is progressing well in his rehabilitation, while linebacker Dre Greenlaw’s re-signing is being actively pursued.
Lynch also addressed Brian Griese’s decision to step away from coaching the quarterbacks, citing a “family decision” that prioritized Griese’s personal life.
