San Francisco 49ers General Manager John Lynch is exploring contract talks with quarterback Brock Purdy and has placed wide receiver Deebo Samuel on the trade block. Negotiations are underway for a Purdy extension, while Samuel’s future remains uncertain.
Lynch confirmed that contract talks with Purdy have started, despite initially being tight-lipped about negotiations. He praised the QB’s representation and expressed optimism about reaching an agreement. “We want Brock to be our quarterback as long as we’re here and beyond,” Lynch said.
Samuel, who has requested a fresh start, is reportedly open to trading away from the 49ers. Despite this, Lynch downplayed concerns about Samuel leaving, stating that he is a great player who makes game-changing plays. However, Lynch acknowledged that time moves on, and it’s clear that Samuel’s time with the team is limited.
Lynch also emphasized that Samuel asked for a change of scenery rather than simply being traded or discussed as trade fodder. The 49ers are willing to accommodate his request, at least allowing him to explore options.
In contrast, Purdy is expected to remain with the team through an extension. Lynch prioritizes retaining the QB, who has made it clear he wants to participate in offseason programs without contract talks lingering into training camp.
The status of these negotiations will be crucial for the 49ers’ success moving forward.
