San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch is focusing on retaining key players ahead of the NFL combine. The team has made significant progress after a disappointing 6-11 season, with top offense weapons showing signs of improvement.
Lynch discussed Brock Purdy’s contract negotiations, stating that they want him to be their quarterback for as long as he’s with the team. Despite injuries and a career-low performance last season, Purdy still boasts an impressive EPA per play (0.267). The 49ers are confident that both sides can reach an agreement.
However, Lynch remains uncertain about the future of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Although they’re on good terms, Samuel has requested a trade, citing frustration with his involvement in the offense. Lynch believes Samuel wants a “fresh start” and is committed to honoring his request.
The team is expecting Christian McCaffrey to return to form after missing just four games last season due to injuries. Lynch is confident that McCaffrey will have a great year if he’s healthy, given his past performance.
In contrast, three-time All-Pro tackle Trent Williams is expected to return, motivated by the desire to play at an elite level again.
