The University of Utah has secured its path to a 49th consecutive trip to the NCAA women’s gymnastics championships after the postseason bracket was released. The Red Rocks, ranked No. 4 nationally, will host regionals at the Huntsman Center.
The top nine teams in the Salt Lake City regional include No. 5 UCLA, No. 10 Minnesota, No. 13 Stanford, and several conference champions from the Mountain West Conference (MW) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). The regional competition begins with a play-in dual meet on April 2 for BYU and Utah State, with the winner advancing to one of two regional semifinals.
UCLA is favored to win after having the highest top score this season (198.450), while Stanford has shown a history of upsets in the postseason. Minnesota finished third at the Big Ten conference championships behind UCLA and No. 8 Michigan State.
Utah coach Carly Dockendorf stated, “We don’t want to be perfect yet… When it really counts, it’s going to be at national championships.” Despite the quality of competition, Utah is considered one of the best teams in the country and expects to advance.
