As someone who has used numerous Linux desktops, I’ve been impressed by the ability of developers to reinvent the wheel and create more efficient and aesthetically pleasing operating systems. The open-source world is known for its creativity, and this is evident in the beauty of Linux desktops.
Beauty is subjective, but for me, some of today’s Linux distributions outshine Windows 11 or MacOS Sonoma in terms of performance, reliability, simplicity, and beauty.
After much deliberation, I’ve narrowed down my top five favorite Linux distributions that showcase incredible design. Whether you agree with my choices or not, it’s hard to deny the amazing work these developers have put into creating user-friendly and visually stunning operating systems.

1. Elementary OS
Elementary OS is a beautifully designed distribution that resembles MacOS in its dock and top-bar layout. Its default layout is seamless, making it ideal for new users. As it’s based on Ubuntu, you get to enjoy Ubuntu’s stability and ease of software installation.
2. Zorin OS
Zorin OS developers take their aesthetics seriously, and it shows. The distribution offers four different layouts upon installation, including Windows 11, Plasma, GNOME, and Xfce. You can even purchase the Pro edition for additional layouts. Zorin OS is all about flexibility, with a Jelly Mode that adds a nice wobbly window effect.
3. Ubuntu Budgie
Ubuntu Budgie has earned a special place in my heart. It’s beautiful, easy to use, and adds just the right amount of sass to remind you that it’s not using GNOME or Plasma. Its MacOS-like layout is a perfect blend of styles, with a transparent top bar that beautifully blends into the background.
4. Garuda Linux (Dragonized edition)
Garuda Linux (Dragonized edition) is the coolest-looking distribution on the market – especially if you have a penchant for dark themes and neon accents. This version uses a customized Plasma desktop to deliver a look and feel that’s hard to ignore.
5. KDE Neon
KDE Neon is all class, with a touch of fun. It’s beautiful, simple, and makes a statement. Every time I fire up a KDE Neon virtual machine, it puts a smile on my face. The interface may be familiar, but the developers have managed to make it look fresh, with magical wallpapers to boot.
