A 50,000-year-old baby mammoth, nicknamed Yana, has been unveiled to the public after being discovered in Russia’s Siberia. The female mammoth weighs over 100 kg and is 120 cm tall, with remains found among melting permafrost at the Batagaika crater. Scientists believe Yana was just one year old when she died, making her remains one of the best-preserved ever found.
The discovery, part of a group of seven mammoth carcasses recovered worldwide, will be studied by researchers at Russia’s North-Eastern Federal University. The find is considered exceptional, providing new insights into how mammoths lived and adapted to their environment. Yana’s remains are expected to shed light on the lives of these ancient creatures in one of the most remote regions of Siberia.
