50,000-Year-Old ‘Yana’ Mammoth Found in Siberia

A remarkable discovery has been made in Siberia, where a 50,000-year-old baby mammoth carcass, nicknamed Yana, has been uncovered. This exceptional find is the best-preserved mammoth carcass ever discovered, according to scientists. Yana was found in permafrost at the Batagaika crater and measures 4 feet tall and 6.6 feet long, weighing around 400 pounds.

The discovery was made by local residents who happened to be in the area when the permafrost melted, revealing the partially thawed mammoth calf. Despite being only one year old when she died, Yana’s body has shown remarkable preservation, with her head and forelimbs still intact.

Scientists are now studying Yana at the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory, which specializes in researching mammoths and their Ice Age environment. The team aims to learn more about Yana’s origins and how she ended up as one of the best-preserved specimens ever found.
