58% of Shoppers Start Holiday Gift Shopping in Early November

A majority of holiday shoppers plan to finish buying gifts the week leading up to Christmas, according to a recent survey. Despite this, many are still shopping early due to various reasons.

The National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics found that 58% of shoppers start checking off their gift lists in early November, largely driven by Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals at discounted prices. However, despite the early start, 62% of shoppers didn’t expect to finish wrapping their holiday purchases until December.

As of early December, Americans have purchased only half of the gifts on their shopping lists on average, with 10% being finished. The majority of shoppers (49%) opt for a head start on shopping to spread out their spending and avoid last-minute stress.

Each shopper is expected to spend an average of $902 across gifts, food, decorations, and other seasonal items. Super Saturday, the last Saturday before Christmas, falls on Dec. 21 this year and is one of the biggest shopping days of the season, with an estimated 157.2 million people planning to shop.

Experts attribute the increase in shoppers on Super Saturday to a shortened window between Thanksgiving and Christmas. With consumers hitting stores and shopping online to get final gifts and take advantage of special promotions and deals, it’s clear that many are making the most of their holiday shopping season.
