6.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Japan’s Coast

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck off the coast of southern Japan on Monday night. The quake occurred approximately 7 miles southeast of Miyazaki, Japan, at 9:19 p.m. local time.

According to the US Geological Survey (USG), seismologists will review data and may revise the earthquake’s magnitude. Further information collected could prompt USG scientists to update the earthquake severity map.

Following a significant earthquake, aftershocks are common events that can occur days or weeks later. Aftershocks typically involve smaller earthquakes that occur along the same fault line as the initial quake. They can be of similar or larger magnitude and continue to affect damaged areas.
