A strong 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck in the Solomon Sea on Saturday, prompting a tsunami alert for parts of Papua New Guinea’s coast. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), waves of 3-10 feet above normal tidal levels are possible near the epicenter. The quake occurred at 6:04 a.m. local time, approximately 121 miles southeast of Kimbe. As seismologists review data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude or update the shake-severity map.
Aftershocks in the region can occur days, weeks, or even years after the initial earthquake. These events can be as significant as the original quake and continue to impact already damaged areas. The USGS did not issue alerts for other Pacific Ocean locations.
