US States Send National Guard Troops to Washington, D.C.
Six states have agreed to deploy their National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., with over 1,100 new soldiers expected to patrol the city’s streets. The deployment follows President Trump’s declaration of a “crime emergency” in the nation’s capital.
The states involved are all run by Republican governors: Tennessee, West Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Ohio. However, experts argue that this move is not about improving public safety, but rather a political power grab.
Meanwhile, European leaders are working to determine the next steps in ending Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump has ruled out sending US troops to join a European-led force, instead pledging support for security guarantees. The European Council President says there is a difficult road ahead, but reassurance from the US has brought some comfort.
In Texas, lawmakers are set to vote on redrawing the state’s congressional map today. The bill aims to create five new GOP seats, which could make all the difference in the House of Representatives. Democrats argue that this move weakens Black and Latino votes, and will challenge it in court.
On a separate note, research suggests that taking 7,000 steps per day can improve one’s health by reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, depression, and dementia. However, there is no conclusive evidence on whether the speed of walking affects the outcome.
Additionally, World Photography Day has been celebrated with a collection of photos showcasing unique experiences of joy and challenges from communities across the US.
