A magnitude-7.6 earthquake hit the Caribbean Sea southwest of the Cayman Islands on Saturday, prompting some islands and countries to urge people near the coastline to move inland in case of a tsunami.
The USGS reported the quake’s epicenter was 130 miles south-southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands, with wave heights expected to reach 0.3 to 1 meter.
Puerto Rico’s Governor Jenniffer González Colón said there is no need for people to leave their homes due to a tsunami advisory, but local alarms sounded caused some residents to evacuate coastal areas.
Other affected countries include the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the Bahamas. The US National Tsunami Warning Center initially issued warnings for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, which were later cancelled.
