A deadly bombing in Gaza has claimed the lives of seven Israeli troops, making it one of Israel’s deadliest days in the conflict with Hamas militants. The attack occurred on Tuesday and drew attention back to the ongoing war between Israel and Iran.
According to Palestinian health officials, Israeli attacks have killed 79 people over the past day, including 33 who died while trying to access aid. The military says it has fired warning shots at people approaching its forces in a suspicious manner.
The conflict began nearly two years ago, with Hamas leading the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. U.S.-led ceasefire efforts have repeatedly stalled.
The latest incident occurred in Khan Younis, where Israeli troops were attacked by Palestinian militants. The army said seven soldiers were killed and another was seriously wounded. Hamas claimed it had ambushed Israeli soldiers taking cover inside a residential building.
Over 860 Israeli soldiers have been killed since the war began, including more than 400 during the fighting in Gaza. The initial Hamas attack killed over 1,200 people, mostly civilians.
Palestinians are eager for a ceasefire, with some expressing frustration that the war has dragged on for nearly two years. “We’ve been suffering for two years,” said one displaced resident. “What do they have left here? There are no houses, trees, or rocks, or humans left.”
Aid is slowly reaching Gaza, but many say it’s too little. The conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis, with experts saying Israel’s blockade and military campaign have driven the population to the brink of famine.
In related news, violence also rages in Jerusalem and the West Bank, with three people killed after Jewish settlers stormed a town near Ramallah.
