Ahead of World Kidney Day (March 13), we spoke with consultant renal physiotherapist Sharlene Greenwood about the vital functions kidneys perform and how to keep them happy and healthy.

Our kidneys filter waste, regulate fluid balance, support bone health, and more. They remove toxins from the blood, maintain electrolyte balance, and control blood pressure by managing fluid levels and producing hormones. Kidney health issues can lead to chronic kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, heart disease, anaemia, infections, weakened bones, and high blood pressure.

To keep your kidneys in top shape, try these seven simple habits:

1. Stay hydrated: Drink 6-8 glasses of water daily to flush out toxins.
2. Eat a balanced diet: Focus on fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, while limiting processed foods, salt, and sugary drinks.
3. Control blood pressure and blood sugar: Manage hypertension and diabetes through diet, exercise, and medication if needed.
4. Exercise regularly: Engage in activities that make you breathless like walking and swimming to maintain muscle health and a healthy weight.
5. Avoid excessive salt and processed foods: High sodium intake can strain your kidneys and lead to high blood pressure.
6. Limit alcohol and quit smoking: Both can harm kidney function and increase the risk of kidney disease.
7. Get regular checkups: Routine kidney function tests can detect issues early, especially if you have risk factors like diabetes or hypertension.
